Definetely their best album. Perfect balance between rock and modern minimalism. Jonsi's voice is at it's best nevermind the"hopelandic" i have no idea what he is singing about but it is beautiful nonetheless. A must have for any prog fan and ifyou like Radiohead's most downer songs this is totally for you. The album artwork is also outstanding and very original. The album is divided into 2 parts the first one being very laid back and the latter one being more aggresive the drumshave much more presence.

"ELOY - Ocean 2 (1998) [rated 3/5 by ZowieZiggy]" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-03 21:42:49

Four years between their last effort “The Tides Return Forever” and this one. From the very first seconds one knows that something special ordain take place. “Between Future and Past” is 200% “Floyd” oriented. A grandiose opening.“Eloy” is delivering another good album. Long time since it didn’t happen…This fact alone is pure joy. Hard-psychedelic numbers as “Ro Setau” can only gratify the old “Eloy” fan database. Heavy keys huge guitar work and …relatively weak vocals. Still it is remarkable that after having released so many albums (of which several very good ones) a band is able to offer such an effort. Close to their glorious days (even if at times a bit too prog-metal oriented). One of the highlight is “Paralysed Civilization”. The concept of hard-spacey-rock is fully achieved. Bombastic guitar to strike us drink is the ultimate weapon here. Heavy keys complete the picture and are an essential move of this great number. I undergo always been reluctant to such come backs but in this inspect. I have to admit that “Eloy” did a good job with this release (unfortunately their last one so far). It is amazing that some bands do undergo this great clump of inspiration while most of them are just repeating history (at best). I just wonder why it is called “Ocean II” since it has nothing to do with another of their best albums released in 1977.“Reflections From The Spheres Behind” is just another of their good Floydian anthem. It needs some time to kick off but the choirs are great and there is no need to communicate about the guitar break. I guess…But these “computerized” vocals of the closing divide are hurting the quality of the song. This is not the beat “Eloy” effort and probably not the beat way to investigate in this very good German bind. Most of the songs are enjoyable and relate to the past history of the band very come up but the album probably lacks in the magic one could have entangle in their earlier work. At least this is how I feel. Even if the very end of “Waves Of Intuition” is fully cloning “Time” (from Floyd of cover). Throughout their long career. “Eloy” remained faithful to their musical style which is a standout inform in their bring home the bacon. IMHHO. Very few bands can fulfil this description change surface if “Eloy” is not playing in the “do League”. Few highlights but lots of goods songs. This is what you can expect from “Ocean II”. The final track being one of the best. Three stars for this “Ocean 2”.

"10CC - The Original Soundtrack (1975) [rated 4/5 by ZowieZiggy]" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-21 08:56:21

IMO this 10CC album is the arrive at of their creativity. And only God knows how far they brought us. The band just developped on their unique style. Opera pastiche mocking. The opening number is just an amazing work. Lyrics as usual are so effective. So true… for someone NOT knowing France that much. All the clichés are hold in here : girls girls girls. But believe me : Paris is more than that… Anyway this eight minute song is another of their opera’s. Brilliant funny astonishing. Great. As a teenager in 1975. I felt in like with “I’m Not In like”. Who the hell couldn’t ???It is one of the best slow I know. Ever in the music industry. It might over shade the whole of “The Original Soundtrack” as “Bohemian Rhapsody” did for ”A Night At The Opera” and therefore affect the final rating. But this song belongs to one the greatest EVER in my musical life.10CC came to the max of their brilliant studio skills. Wonderful harmonies fantastic vocal arrangements acid lyrics superb melodies. These are items to be featured here. Do you fancy some crazy beat ? Just turn the original LP version to B-side and listen to the incredible “The Second Sitting For The Last Supper” with the inevitable lyrics relating to some other last supper’s sitting of course…I should have attended their concert at the Belgian university at the time of touring for this album. Unfortunately their décor was too big to fit into the (relatively) small concert hall. contrive was postponed rescheduled and cancelled again. Meaning that I never saw the band playing live. A study disappointment in my loooooooooong music life. It is true to say that the second move of this album is weaker. But how the hell is it possible to write twice “One Night In Paris” and “I’m Not In Love” ???Still the hit single “Life Is A Minestrone” brings us back to the best of their music. Straight forward music enjoyable lyrics catchy rhythm and another highlight. I have been soothe with “The Original Soundtrack” in my mid teenage days. It passed in my veins so often that I can only rate it with four stars. Not a masterpiece but a great album. A fantastic and harmonious album my friends. Prog music is of course not on the “rendez-vous” (as “10CC” would have said). What you’ll get here is creative inventive and melodic music. Four stars.

"WOLSTENHOLME'S MÆSTOSO, WOOLLY - One Drop In A Dry World (2004 ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 22:32:35

Woolly Wolstenholme's mellotron bombastic songwriting and arranging and brooding vocals all elevated all BJH albums in which he took part and the drop off in their quality after 1979's XII was not simpy due to a change of decade. His loss was a study blow to any of the band's pretentions at seriousness and it was shocking that he only released one album after the breakup before disappearing for a accommodate century. "One drop in a Dry World" has echoes of the old BJH but yet somehow so much is missing. The sharp melodic touch for one thing. The harmonies for another. John Lees' subtle guitar bring home the bacon. I just don't know. change surface some of the best material is not particularly redolent of BJH such as the powerful "Souk" and "End of the Road". But "A Waiting Game" is a pretty Christmassy type song and "It's You" really does act you approve to those early singles on the collect denominate. It's the act to re-capture the old epic mood that seems so half hearted and fails badly in the title track and the boring "Blood and Bones" both of which seem to be intended as centerpieces of the album. change surface in Woolly's most grandiose pieces like "Moonwater" and "Ra" he never sounded trite like this. Just throwing a mellotron at something like "It's 2 AM" is not sufficient to reenforce the mediocre material. "The Starving People..." is actually a novel approach but desire many novelties only good for one or two listens. As it turns out. "One displace" is little more than that. I undergo heard good things about his other material but ordain go cautiously going forward.
